Description
We help create after-school sports opportunities for girls and boys that build their confidence and skills, connect them to mentors and improve their health.
From getting the ball rolling to pushing it farther and faster, we work with partners and experts in the youth sports, health, education and policy fields to create real access, quality and equality in the after-school sports arena.
- We partner with after-school sports programs, offering a range of supports—training, consulting, and Coaching Corps volunteer coaches—that help more young people learn the important life lessons sports offer.
- We dedicate special initiatives to building community through sports and supporting equal opportunities for girls to participate in and benefit from sports.
- We work with policymakers and sports stakeholders to create public awareness and support legislation that supports after-school programs for low-income youth.
We know that sports has tremendous benefits for kids. Young people who participate in sports are less likely to...
- Feel isolated
- Become or remain obese
- Drop out of school, join gangs, abuse drugs and alcohol, accidentally get pregnant or break the law.
We're making progress--the kind that uses sports to inspire self-confidence and pride, a sense of belonging and a warm ray of hope--but we can do more. And we are.
So far, we have:
- Created over 15,000 new sports opportunities for kids
- Trained over 1,600 program leaders from 120 programs to improve program quality for more than 70,000 kids
- Placed over 600 Coaching Corps volunteer coaches in programs
- Awarded over $5 million in funding to expand and improve programs
